The voice of retired Stanley farmer David McKay will be heard on the radio this week as a final push for changes to laws which allow groundwater mining, ahead at Saturday’s Victorian election.

But rather than back one candidate, the advertisements from campaign organisation SumOfUs say farmers are happy to work with whichever side wins government.
“As we face what would be many long, dry years ahead, we simply cannot afford for our precious water supplies to be trucked away, bottled and sold off by multinationals,” Mr McKay said.
“Our communities need protection … We need politicians from all sides to stand up to powerful corporate interests and fix Victoria’s broken water and planning laws.”
Independent Benambra candidate Jenny O’Connor has campaigned heavily with the Stanley residents, having started during her time as Indigo Council mayor, but Liberal Bill Tilley said it was not an issue for local government.
