Wodonga’s Tom Johnson suffered a horror dislocated left ankle and fractured leg while playing football for the Bulldogs in the Ovens and Murray in May, 2017.
“I get the plate and six screws taken out, which doesn’t really cut through any muscle,” he said.
“It’s day surgery, the main thing coming out of it is just keeping the wound clean from infection.”
Johnson’s maiden provincial ton last week against North Albury catapulted the opening batsman to 290 runs at 72.5.
Team-mate Jack Craig is next on 222.
It’s a shame Johnson will miss December as he’s in career-best form.
“Yeah, I’d say so, I’m probably hitting the ball the best I ever have and seeing the ball just as good,” he said.
“I guess it comes with more experience, I’ve always been able to hit the ball well, it’s just when not to hit the ball and make those decisions.”

- Tom Johnson
Johnson says after focusing on football, where he played a handful of SANFL games and also represented the O and M last year, he’s now leaning towards his summer sport.
“Since the injury, I probably have looked forward to cricket just as much as football, I have missed it and put it to the side for a long time,” he said.
“When you do start making runs and winning games with the Wodonga boys, it makes it so enjoyable.”
Johnson represented South Australia Country as an all-rounder, but the injury has derailed his pace bowling.
“I’ve only bowled twice when they needed me, I’m just trying to back off a little bit because it’s been sore but, hopefully after the surgery, I might be able to get back on the bowling front,” he said.
The hard-hitting right-hander will be looking to go out on a high in the away game to Tallangatta.
The visitors are the only unbeaten team after five rounds, while Tallangatta has just the one loss.
Wodonga couldn’t have been more impressive in racking up nearly 300 runs against the grand finalists, while the Bushies beat winless Raiders by 29 runs.
