The full-page advertisement taken out in Friday’s Wangaratta Chronicle does not say where it came from, just that it was authorised by M. Harris, Melbourne.
But a quick search reveals “M. Harris” regularly authorises National Party advertising material.
Ms Atkins quickly tweeted the Nationals on Friday morning, saying “you forgot your logo on that nasty A4 ad”.
The ad points to her history with the Liberal and National parties, Wangaratta Council and Cathy McGowan – all topics covered by The Border Mail during the Ovens Valley election campaign.
“I have run a strong grassroots campaign with a clear vision for the future of Ovens Valley — a vision for new jobs, improved services, and linking up our valleys,” Ms Atkins said.
“Rather than join the contest of ideas, my opponents have instead engaged in smear tactics and negative campaigning.
“Be it the letter boxing of the warped letter that referred to me as ‘evil’, or the nasty robo-calls earlier this month from Constituent Management Services, a company linked to the NSW chapter of the National Party.
“This is the reason voters are leaving the major parties in droves. I am proud of my record and proud of the campaign our team of volunteers has run in Ovens Valley."
