Despite few issues with her treatment, she later had a failed breast reconstruction.
With a return to work out of the question, Mrs Richards decided to take the plunge into the online realm.
Yesterday she launched her new website: cancerrelaxationwithatwist.com.
“My aim was to set up the website and provide some light relief for people going through cancer, thus the title,” she said.
“From my research life after cancer and finding the new normal is a huge problem for so many people.”
With the help of YouTube tutorials, a friend and the Airtasker app, Mrs Richard’s new website went live at Bright.
“This project has been a labour of love and damn hard work but I have learnt so much about widgets, word-press, plugins and the list goes on!” Mrs Richards said.
“If one lady is sitting at an appointment waiting for the oncologist for results, or lying awake after a round of chemo, or a family member is feeling so overwhelmed, stumbles upon this page and reads a blog and it just takes their mind off the endless grind of cancer treatment for a few minutes, my job is done.”
Mrs Richards said her website was not solely focused on cancer.
She said there were three themes:
- Many crazy blogs to lighten your day, unrelated to cancer.
- My own personal “adventure” from diagnosis to the present.
- Where am I now? Life after cancer is often more difficult than treatment.
Mrs Richards said her site would continue to evolve.
“I am hoping in time I will be able to link as many resources that can assist people in navigating their needs and wants during and after treatment,” she said.
“Navigating the health sector can be a daunting task; I want to share all the resources I have been able to tap into both medical and non-medical.”
Mrs Richards said during her research she discovered Pinc & Steel, which was founded on the basis of developing a world-class program for cancer survivorship, committed to supporting people through treatment and recovery.
She said she had regular physiotherapy sessions with certified Pinc Cancer Rehabilitation Physiotherapist Julie Blake at Ovens Valley Physio and Pilates at Bright.
Mrs Richards’ website is found at: cancerrelaxationwithatwist.com.
It will soon be linked to Facebook and Instagram and eventually YouTube.
The website does not provide medical advice.
