For Pablo Pace, it’s an apt description – the five-piece is at home on most stages, pub or patio.
Hailing from Albury, they've been making a name for themselves in 2018, releasing an EP and booking show after show, after show.
Two of their songs, Aurora and Pretty Hair were uploaded to Triple J Unearthed and favourably reviewed by indie aficionados Dave Ruby Howe and Tommy Faith.
Channelling a variety of influences from a variety of genres, Pablo Pace, aka Ciqala Johnson, Lachlan Wood, Zali Douglas, Alex Thurling, and Oscar Dean, have fashioned an upbeat but laid back sound.
Underpinned by sounds of indie, soul and reggae, the band cite the likes of Ocean Alley, Twin Peaks and The Beatles as influences, as well as a wide selection of other bands.
While those influences are definitely there, the group is out to fashion a sound that is entirely their own.
“We don’t necessarily want to be heard and have someone say we remind them of a certain band,” Douglas said.
“We want to be different, but at the same time we want to take in everyone that inspires us.”
Pablo Pace was born from the long-running Kool Skools project, which gives secondary school students the opportunity to record and produce music.
Johnson, Douglas and Dean all participated in the project last year, but it wasn’t until its completion that they decided to work together.
“Some of us were in Kool Skools together, but we got talking on the night of the showcase and decided to play one of the open mic nights at the Retro Cafe,” Dean said.
“Myself, Ciqala and Zali went to school together, we knew Alex through mutual friends and Lachlan joined us just a few weeks ago.”
Life has moved pretty quickly for Pablo Pace in the last 18 months, but the band is keen to go with the flow.
You can guarantee one thing from Pablo Pace: they’re going to do their best to get you on your feet, and they’ll probably succeed.
