Listening to Voices Theatre Group will perform The Director’s Cut at the Butter Factory Theatre on Wednesday.
Gateway Health project manager Kate Fiske said that at a time when the Victorian government was promising a Senate inquiry into the mental health system, this performance offered powerful, first-hand accounts of people’s lives and what it was like for them to get help.
Listening to Voices is a Wodonga-based project that has inspired community conversation and connection and reduced stigma around mental illness.
The performance also challenges perceptions around mental illness and highlights the impact of trauma and adverse childhood experiences as at the root of much human distress.
“Listening to Voices is an innovative and unique response in our community helping to reduce isolation and improve connection when people may feel too stigmatised to speak up,” Ms Fiske said.
“The performance aims to help community feel better equipped to support each other rather than relying on a full to the brim system.”
The show starts at 7pm.
