The JJ Richards employee noticed the waste in the back of his dump truck was on fire in Albury about 2.45pm on Tuesday.
The driver managed to pull over the vehicle on Elizabeth Mitchell Drive, at the eastern side of the Albury Airport runway, and dumped the load.
Firefighters attended and extinguished the fire.
Large skip bins were bought in to remove the rubbish, which will remain on scene overnight to ensure the fire is fully extinguished.
Firefighter Alex Marschall said the cause was unclear, but could have been something as simple as a car battery pushing against the side of the truck.
“The pressure of on the load may have also caused it to catch alight,” he said.
“Fortunately where the driver dumped it was pretty good.”
He reminded drivers to slow to 40km/h when passing emergency vehicles.
