A COROWA landowner and a contractor have been fined a combined $22,500 after conducting illegal works on the Murray River.

The pair were involved in the construction of a retaining wall and concrete steps and depositing red gum sleepers, concrete, sand and turf on the property.
The landowner was fined $15,000 in Albury Local Court, and the contractor fined $7500, with both to pay costs of $5000.
The prosecution was undertaken by the Natural Resources Access Regulator for unlawful activities on waterfront land.
Chief regulatory officer Grant Barnes said approvals were needed to ensure the environment wasn't harmed.
“These fines are a deterrent to landholders and contractors who think they can change a river corridor without thought for the environment or the community,” he said.
