Police told Albury Local Court on Monday that Brett Daniel Barton had texted the woman that he was “beyond angry” and then phoned to warn the mother of his young child he was “coming to get you”.
He hung up the phone then later pursued her in his father’s car as the terrified woman fled her North Albury home, speeding up when she recognised him.
In her complaint to police, she told of one especially concerning text from Barton.
“Just messaged Mum and Dad,” Barton wrote, “and said goodbye, so you’re dead now.”
Barton pleaded guilty to a domestic violence-related charge of stalk and intimidate, as well as using a carriage service to menace, harass or offend.
You’re dead and your partner’s dead. I want to hurt you. See you very soon.
- Brett Daniel Barton, in texts sent to his ex-partner
Magistrate Rodney Brender said he was going to order a sentence assessment report for Barton as the charges were “pretty serious”.
The unemployed 25-year-old, who did not have a lawyer, now lived at his parents’ home.
Police said Barton and the victim began a relationship in 2016, though this ended early in 2018.
They “decided to stay civil for the sake of their two-year-old” and so were “on-and-off” for most of this year up until September.
The incident that led to the charges unfolded on November 27.
The victim was at home about 10.15am when she responded to a message from Barton.
These texts included several harassing and threatening comments, including: “You’re dead and your partner’s dead. I want to hurt you. See you very soon.”
She replied by asking him not to go to where she lived.
“I have actually punched myself in the head that many times,” he then messaged.
“That’s what I’m going to do to you now, I’m beyond angry. I’m going now. You’re dead.”
At one point during his pursuit of her through Albury, he pulled up beside her car after she stopped in Lavington and yelled at her to wind down her window.
Barton will be sentenced on February 5.
