Albury officers launched Operation Safe Arrival on Friday morning, which followed the start of Operation Roadwise in Wodonga a week earlier.
NSW Chief Inspector Greg Lynch said back roads in rural areas would be the main target of breath testing.
“We will be travelling the same roads that you will this Christmas,” he said.
“Your trip is our trip.”
Double demerit points are being enforced in NSW until January 1.
Drivers caught using mobile phones during the period will incur 10 demerit points.
Wodonga Sergeant Cameron Roberts said there are “as many police as we can have out there” working.
“We’re doing lots of breath testing and drug testing,” he said.
“This time of year is high-risk on the roads.
“People know what the right thing to do is.”
Sergeant Roberts said fatigued driving was also of concern.
He urged people to take regular breaks and avoid trying to drive long distances in unrealistic times.
