An Albury mother is turning her skills towards fighting a condition that has affected two of her three children.
Ashlea Howells will raise money for support group Border Cystic Fibrosis through a Ladies Night on Saturday, January 19, at The Elms Cafe, 515 Kiewa Street, Albury.
Organised with cafe owner Melissa Pollard, a former school mate and now chef, the event will include a make-up demonstration by Mrs Howells, who has worked in that field for two years.
A key motivation behind the event is to support the group that supports her family, which includes Leo, 6, and Olivia, 2, who have cystic fibrosis, a genetic respiratory condition that mainly impacts on the lungs.
“They have to take medication all the time, we go to Melbourne every three months for them to have check-ups,” Mrs Howells said.
The Howells had been living in Sydney when Olivia was diagnosed as a newborn.
“She was picked up in the heel prick test and we had the other two children tested and found out that Leo had it as well,” Mrs Howells said.
“But I knew there was something going on when he was a baby.
“I was continually going to the doctors all the time, trying to figure out what was going on because he wasn’t putting on weight and that sort of thing. They just sort of fobbed it off.”
The family moved back to Albury about two years ago and Mrs Howells created Makeup by Ashlea.
“It was something that I was thinking about for a while, and I started to study when I was pregnant with my third child,” she said.
The Ladies Night will include finger food, wine, beer, cider and soft drinks, with $20 of each ticket to go to Border Cystic Fibrosis.
Ms Pollard said the function followed an Ladies Empowering Night at the cafe in October.
“It was a buzz, the place was full, the ladies all enjoyed it,” she said.
“Saturday should just be a really good night too, I think, lots of food, lots of drinks, good times, good company.”
Ladies Night tickets cost $70 and can be bought at The Elms Cafe
