Three structures that closely resemble railway passenger carriages have been delivered to the site behind the old goods shed building.

Station 73 developer Clinton Williams told The Border Mail they were now being fitted out to house a cafe.

“They’re not real carriages, but have been fabricated to look like railway carriages,” he said.

The Border Mail understands there are already tenants ready to move into the carriages when they’re completed. 

The addition will further solidify Junction Square as the city’s main culinary hub, joining Andiamo Street Kitchen, Topolino Gelateria, Piccolo Pod, The Goods Shed, BeanStation and Miss Amelie.

Miss Amelie owner David Kapay hoped the new cafe would complement the existing businesses.

“The jury is out on the design – obviously it’s far from completion, but let’s just say hopefully the frog turns into the prince we have all been promised,” he said.

“There is talk of a marketplace to be constructed for a real South Melbourne feel, which would be incredible.

“It can only boost tourism for the region, attracting more people to enjoy Junction Square.”

The railway-themed cafe will be the latest edition to Station 73 projects, the centrepiece being the $50 million development of an entertainment centre housing a 10-screen cinema complex, restaurants and more.

It follows the recent completion of the $1.2 million Richardson Park.
