We’ve seen records broken with Wednesday’s 45.3 degrees the hottest day in Albury-Wodonga since since official records began in 1973.
The stretch of five days over 40 also equalled a record, according to the Bureau of Meteorology, meaning the past week has been uncomfortable for a lot of people.
Rutherglen and Wahgunyah winemakers fear this year’s harvest could be the hardest hit in two decades, with the run of 40-degree days taking their toll on vineyards.
No air conditioning on the hottest day in decades would bother anyone, but it particularly drew the ire of magistrate John Murphy, with a technician forced to travel from Melbourne to fix it, such was the demand on Border technicians.
Of course, when it’s so hot, people go looking for relief, whether it’s in the form of an ice cream, shopping centre, movies, pool or river.
But when that river relief involves trespassing and jumping from the top of the Sienna Daisy, well that crosses a line and, quite rightly, had Fraser Knowles and Albury Border Search and Rescue Squad captain Paul Marshall cranky.
It’s looking likely we’ll have another week of 40-degree-plus temperatures ahead so, please, take care of yourself and those around you.
Cheers, Xavier.
