The 15-year-old had been involved in a dispute with his 16-year-old at a property in Culcairn.
Police and paramedics were called to the house about 5.30pm on Saturday afternoon.
Detective Inspector Winston Woodward said the pair had been involved in a confrontation.
“It is a case where an argument has escalated out of control, and now a 15-year-old has got a serious stab wound to the abdomen,” he said.
“The 15-year-old, we hope, will pull through with his injuries, but he is still in a serious condition in Melbourne.”
The teenager had undergone an operation in Albury before being transported to Melbourne for further surgery.
Detective Inspector Woodward said his older brother had been charged with reckless wounding.
Police also applied for an apprehended violence order.
He said it showed that domestic violence didn’t just involve men and women.
Police meanwhile believe a shooting near Deniliquin which has left a woman fighting for life was not domestic violence related.
The woman was shot while spotlighting with five other people at Pretty Pine about 12.10am on Saturday.
She sustained serious head injuries.
Detective Inspector Woodward said it was believed her husband accidentally shot her while loading a rifle.
“We will claim that it is a tragic accident,” he said.
“We have not uncovered anything where we believe there is an intent there to do harm.
“It is one of those situations where using firearms, extreme care has to be utilised.”
The woman remained in a critical condition on Monday.
Her husband, 32, was charged with offences including using a firearm under the influence of alcohol.
He was refused bail and will return to court on Wednesday.
