Ellard, who played with coach Jake Sharp and Nathan Laracy in the VFL in 2017, committed to the Saints this week after a recent conversation with Sharp.
“I just sent Jake a text for his birthday a couple of weeks ago and he asked me what I was doing with my footy,” Ellard said.
“I was coming back to Melbourne and, after talking to Jake and Nathan Laracy, I thought it sounded pretty good.
“That’s pretty much where it started.”
Ellard played with NEAFL club Southport last year and was robbed of a premiership after injuring his ankle in the preliminary final.
Former Ovens and Murray and Tallangatta and District league player Lee Dale was one of his teammates at Southport.
“I spoke to Lee as well and he said I’d like Myrtleford,” Ellard said.
“I’ve played five years of state league footy now and wanted a change.”
Ellard, 24, played with VFL clubs Northern Blues, Coburg, Richmond and Werribee before moving to Queensland.
In another boost for Myrtleford, former Barnawartha and Wangaratta player Paul Harrington will join his brother, Liam, at McNamara Reserve.
Sharp said Ellard and Harrington would bolster Myrtleford’s running brigade.
“We really happy to have Tom and Paul with us,” Sharp said.
“We’ve worked hard on building our culture and I think they will fit in well.
“It’s been good to get a number of locals back and we’re just working hard and doing everything we can to prepare for the season.”
