It is believed it began from a lightning strike at around nine o’clock last night.
It has now spread across four hectares of ground, but is being contained through back burning.
The Riverina Rural Fire Service currently have 17 vehicles and one aircraft attacking the fire.
Smoke may be seen as far east as Cooma, while the fire can be seen from the western townships.
This is now the fifth fire to burn out of control across the Riverina in the past week.
Sudden lightning strikes overnight caused the spread of fires in Tumbarumba, Tumut, and Talbingo as the Possum’s Point fire continues to cause fighters grief.

“As long as weather is good for us, we’ll be able to continue back burning and through that we’ll be able to contain the fires,” said RFS spokesman Chris Garlick.
“We’re still uncertain with what the weather’s doing but it does look to be heating up towards the end of the week. We’re looking at another few days of high fire danger,” he said.
Unattended fires should be reported to triple zero and the Riverina Highlands fire service may also be contacted on 1800 679 737.
