Fish deaths devastating
In light of the tragic events on the Darling River, the Victorian Inland Fishing Alliance (VIFA) partners – Native Fish Australia and the Australian Trout Foundation – wish to assure Victorian stakeholders that they are ready to assist managers with an army of our volunteers, if similar events ever occur in Victorian streams.

We express our sadness in seeing the devastation in NSW and have great sympathy for anglers and conservationists.
The Darling system is a premier breeding ground for Golden Perch, many of which migrate into waters along the Murray Darling Basin. Accordingly, both NSW and Victoria fishers will suffer the aftermath of the recent kill. We must take the utmost care to ensure that a similar devastating event must not be allowed to occur in Victorian waters.
VIFA members currently work closely with Victoria’s catchment managers and volunteer thousands of hours annually on a range of projects to improve the health of Victorian streams.
In addition to ensuring sufficient river flows by restoring habitat along our great rivers, we are working to make sure that our fisheries are resilient against such terrible events.
However, we also stand ready, united and side by side with our Fisheries, Water and Catchment managers should Victoria’s streams come under threat during dry conditions.

Wonderful service
I am not sure what has happened at Service NSW in Albury but I have been there a couple of times recently.
It is such a pleasant experience to go there now. Smiling helpful faces greet you and help get you organised. The queues seem to flow well and everyone working there appears to enjoy their job. Well done to all.
Whatever has changed since the old RTA is fantastic and a good example of what other public service organisations should model themselves on.
Ian Thomas, Albury
Thank you to all
Australia Day is an opportunity to celebrate the best of living in rural and regional Australia, and there is no better example than here in Indi. Indi has a strong culture of communities working together, often voluntarily, for effective outcomes and a better.
Congratulations to all those receiving Australia Day awards in recognition of their splendid and selfless efforts. A special welcome goes to those becoming new citizens.
My role is to represent the views of all the people of Indi.
In the past year, as a member of the committee inquiring into Constitutional Recognition for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, I had the privilege of engaging with indigenous communities across Australia to better understand and represent their views.
As we reflect upon Australia Day, these views are particularly important.
I continue to encourage all constituents to write to me with their comments and views on Australia Day, with a commitment that I will forward their correspondence to the Prime Minister.
I take this opportunity to say “thank you” to all who work year round to make Australia such a wonderful place to live.
