It’s not a case of opening your doors to the public and sitting back as they come in to spend their hard-earned on whatever it is you have to offer.
Some might think retail is just that.
But the reality of course is it can take years to establish a business, to build a loyal clientele and to do it all in such a way that new customers are always on the way.
And it’s not just about the opening hours.
Business owners also spend a considerable amount of the time when the doors are shut on a whole host of matters integral to making their operation an ongoing success.
That can involve anything from making runs to the capital cities to source then buy stock to the time invested in keeping the books in order.
It’s hard graft, which is why the selfish ways of those who try to rip them off can cause so much heartache.
One such operator is North Albury businessman Clive Williams, who runs Jetis Car and Truck Wreckers on Fallon Street.
It is not the first time The Border Mail has brought to the attention of readers the stories of businesses targeted by ruthless thieves.
In December we told the experience of Albury Family Car Centre owner Mick Ristic and his fears that the crime-spree targeting his South Albury property would force him to close.
Thankfully, arrests were made and security cameras have deterred others so things are on the way up.
But he still wants the community to be vigilant and not to hesitate in contacting police should they see anything suspicious.
For Mr Williams, the cost has been substantial – up to $40,000 from more than a dozen incidents – and it has left him angry at the crooks involved.
As he said about the latest incident just this past Sunday, “we want these mongrels caught. I’ve had a gutful.
“I just want to catch them now.”
We share his sentiment.
And so we would urge anyone with information about these crooks to not keep that information to themselves.
What you see or hear could prove vital in solving a crime.
