Tobby Jarvis had slept on the couch one night in July last year before he got into an argument with the victim at 9am the next morning.
He first pushed her into a door, with one hand on her neck, then slammed her head into a brick wall.
Their young children were in the lounge room, watching television at the time.
The woman fled with the children to the neighbour’s house in an attempt to call for help, but they were not home.
Jarvis had meanwhile got into his car and left.
He told police after he was arrested he did not believe what he did was assault, but eventually pleaded guilty in Wodonga Magistrates Court on Tuesday.
Jarvis’ solicitor Mario Vaccaro said his client had been motivated by jealousy, to which magistrate David Faram replied “so what?”.
“It doesn’t mean there should be a violent reaction,” Mr Faram told the court.
“I’m considering sending him to jail. I haven’t heard any attempt at an explanation of his behaviour.”
The warning brought Jarvis’s new fiance, in court to support him, to tears.
“This behaviour is indefensible … She’s been pushed into a door and she’s had her head slammed into a brick wall,” Mr Faram said.
“There were probably injuries to her children, having been exposed to this sort of violence.”
Mr Vaccaro said Jarvis had a breakdown after the incident, but still has a great relationship with his children.
The case was adjourned until April 2.
