It means Lawrence Krause will not be released until he gets parole on June 13, having been refused bail since November.
Magistrate Imad Abdul-Karim said he saw no possible alternative to full-time custody.
He acknowledged that Krause had been co-operative with detectives in immediately admitting to having the images when they went to his home.
“(But) it would not take a genius to destroy electronic material,” he said.
“It appears to me he has a problem with getting rid of this material.”
Krause, 58, fronted Albury Local Court to be sentenced for a bond breach and the breach of a community corrections order, imposed for similar matters, and over three fresh counts of possessing child abuse material, to which he pleaded guilty
Defence solicitor Tim Hemsley said that in mitigation the images were not new material, nor did the images involve photographs of actual children.
Instead, he said these were cartoon-type characters otherwise known as memes.
Mr Hemsley said Krause had been vigilant in not accessing the internet.
On the issue of the defendant’s supposed self-control, Mr Abdul-Karim said he had read in a sentencing assessment report that Krause “does not trust himself to access the internet”.
The court was told Krause was not just locked into a pattern of like offending but was “continuing to loiter in locations often frequented by children,” such as McDonald’s restaurants and shopping centres.
Detectives went to Krause’s Kaitlers Road home on November 14 about 11am to check whether he was meeting his obligations under the Child Protection Offenders Registration Act.
They asked whether he had any child abuse material, so in response Krause retrieved the three electronic devices with files containing such “stories”.
“The children depicted in these stories,” police said, “appear to be between the ages of 10 to 16” and subject to crimes including rape and torture.
