Headliners the John Butler Trio played to a crowd of 8500 people at All Saints Estate at Wahgunyah, just as the sun was starting to set.

Opening with Wade in the Water, the multi-award winning group were met with strong applause as they worked through a variety of songs from their 20-year career. 

The performance was temporarily put on hold after a girl collapsed near the front of the stage during Butler’s set. 

Paramedics treated her for a suspected seizure and she was removed on a stretcher. 

Organisers credit a strong line-up of Butler, Missy Higgins, Dan Sultan and Stella Donnelly, with attracting an additional 2500 people from last year’s show.

Promoter Michael Newton expects 10,000 at next year’s show after landing Sir Elton John. 

There was much talk at Saturday’s show about Elton’s scheduled performance, with the Wahgunyah venue one of only three places due to host the international superstar as part of A Day on the Green.

“People are really pumped,” Mr Newton said.

“He’s done a couple of Day on the Greens before.

“We put forward a whole lot of venues to Elton’s team.

“On this tour he wants to play some out of the way places, and places he’s never been before.

“He’s going to be living here for a couple of months in Australia.

“We pushed hard, we did the right deal and we landed it.”

Staff are working to land more high profile artists for the 2020 show. 

Mr Newton said the success of the All Saints shows was the ability to attract a wide demographic. 

A crew and staff of about 300 is needed to make the annual gig run smoothly.

“I’m seeing kids out there in their teens and people aged up to 70,” he said.

“There are kids and families which is really nice to see.

“Everyone seems to be having a really good time out there.”

Mr Newton said the high crowd numbers proved bands could play to large regional audiences, which was “really encouraging”. 

He predicts tickets to see Sir Elton John at next January's show will likely be gone within an hour of going on sale. 

The box office for next January's show at All Saints Estate – which will form part of Elton's farewell tour – will open on Wednesday. 

"They will sell out that day,” Mr Newton said. 

“I'm confident they will sell out in the first hour. 

"People should really try to get their tickets as soon as they can.”

The international superstar, who has sold more than 300 million albums, will be the biggest name to ever perform in the North East. 

His tour, spanning 15 performances, will be the last time fans will be able to see him in Australia.
