The Craig Widdison-trained galloper finished third in a trial at Wodonga yesterday.
“I was really rapt with his trial,” Widdison said.
“He had a good blow afterwards so he needed it.
“We will look to give him another trial and then I think he will be pretty close to the mark first-up.
“There is a Vobis Gold race on Wangaratta Cup day that I’m keen to target first-up.
“It’s over 1300-metres and we won’t have to travel far.”
Widdison said Willi Willi would need at least two lead-up runs to be any chance of contesting the Albury Gold Cup on March 22.
“Everything will have to go right for him to be ready in time and I would only target the race if he was thriving,” he said.
“He didn’t have a long spell and still had some residual fitness so we might be able to get him up in distance quick enough for Albury.”
Wangaratta trainer Dan McCarthy was also happy with the trial performance of his stable star Ashlor.
“He will head towards the Oakleigh Plate now on February 23,” McCarthy said.
