CHILTERN'S fire brigade and ambulance team could be housed at the same location.
Ambulance Victoria Hume Regional Director Matt Chadban said his service was considering the concept.
"The CFA has approached Ambulance Victoria with a proposal about co-locating in Chiltern," Mr Chadban said.
"We are looking at this proposal, although no decision has yet been made."
CFA regional operations manager Adrian Gutsche did not respond to The Border Mail.
Chiltern-based Indigo Shire councillor Barb Murdoch welcomed the prospect of a joint venture.
"I think it's probably a good idea, particularly where we are," Cr Murdoch said.
Chiltern's proximity to the Hume Freeway mean its emergency services are regularly exposed to vehicle crashes and injuries.
However, Mr Chadban said "the proposal is not linked to road accidents on the Hume".
In November, Chiltern's long-standing Community Emergency Response Team was promoted to fit the classification of Ambulance Community Officer.
"A key difference compared with the previous Community Emergency Response Team is that the new ACO team drives an ambulance rather than a sedan, so can transport patients to hospital when appropriate," Mr Chadban said.
"This can free up paramedic crews to be available to respond to other emergencies in the community, which can benefit response times."
The ability of ambulances to rapidly answer emergencies in Indigo Shire has been under scrutiny this week after The Border Mail reported the area had the worst response time in Victoria.
The Liberal MP said: "I’d also love to hear about the experiences from people throughout the electorate, if there’s an issue we need to tackle it armed with as much information as we can."
Meanwhile, Mr Chadban said Yackandandah's new Community Emergency Response Team should cut response times.
"The team is made up of local residents providing support to their own community and they have responded to 20 cases in the first month," he said.
