Airservices Australia, which is the responsible authority, has adjusted weekend hours of operation to Saturdays only between 8.15am and 2.45pm following a review into air traffic data and passenger numbers at the airport.
There have also been changes to weekday operations due to some "recent and unfortunate staff circumstances including unforeseen medical issues".
"Airservices is exploring several options to resolve these issues as quickly as possible," an Airservices Australia spokesperson said.
"The new weekday operational hours are 8.15am to 6.30pm local time, which importantly still provides coverage at the busiest times of the day.
"Outside these hours, services will be provided by our Melbourne centre."
Albury remains one of the few regional airports which still has airspace control from a tower.
Its demise also left council with a $250,000 debt.
"Albury Council is committed to maintaining air control tower operations at Albury Airport," mayor Kevin Mack said.
"Council notes that Airservices Australia has flagged a review of its rostering decision after a three-month trial.
"In the meantime, there will be minimal impact on airport operations as most regular passenger flights will arrive and depart during the revised operating hours.
"Safety will not be affected as pilots will use radio communications when the tower is closed.
"This is standard procedure for airports without control towers."
