But if ever there was a time to break that hoodoo, it's this weekend.
Captain Ashley Dunn will play his 100th game for the Border NPL 2 outfit against Eastern Lions at La Trobe on Saturday.
Dunn, 30, joined the club midway through its debut season in 2015, and, incredibly, has only missed two matches in that time.
The Englishman has proven to be very durable - playing every minute of every game in 2018 on his way to winning the club's best and fairest and players' player awards.
"I only found out a few weeks ago it was my 100th game and for it to be on Saturday in the first game of the season here at home is great," Dunn said.
"We’ve never won our opening game of the season at Murray United, so if we can do that it will cap off a good weekend."
Dunn played the highest level of non-league football in England for seven years, most recently with Salford City, but was keen for a change of scenery.
Never could he have imagined he'd still be on the Border five years later.
"Things weren’t going that well for me at the club and I was probably a bit bored of playing non-league football," Dunn said.
"It was always something I wanted to do and this opportunity came up in March in 2015 and I was here in April and have never looked back since.
"It was one of those things, I came over for six months to see what it was like and five years later I’m still here.
"That’s down to quite a few people who are presently at the club and people who aren’t here anymore.
"David and Pedro Afonso really helped me out and supported me when I first moved over here and continue to support me now.
"They’re a really big factor to why I’m still here."
Last season's thrilling 3-2 victory against Nunawading City to secure Murray's future in NPL 2 was "the best feeling" Dunn has had playing the game.
"It was 2-2, and, with the last kick of the game, I put Zac (Walker) through and he scored the match-winner," he said.
"That feeling of relief to beat them and pretty much secure our existence in the league was incredible."
More soccer news:
While Dunn admitted the league is very different to England, he's had the opportunity to play with and against some great players.
"Archie (Thompson) has committed to another year and it’s good to have him around," he said.
"No-one really stands out because we’ve all been on the journey together, especially the senior boys like Sean Pye, Alex West, Ryan Giles and Zac Walker."
Not only is a win in a milestone game a motivator for Dunn, but the fact the club starts three points behind the rest of the league makes it even more important.
"The challenge with this league is there isn’t any easy games," Dunn added.
"If we can put a good start together, we can start climbing into the top half of the ladder."
Kick-off is 5pm, with the under-20s to play at 3pm.
