The first time I went back, it was just basically to get the monkey off my back
- Gary Treeve
Gary Treeve is one of two veteran representatives selected for the 2019 Premier’s Spirit of Anzac Prize tour of Vietnam and Singapore.
The annual competition gives year 9 and 10 students an overseas study tour of sites where Australians have served in war.
Mr Treeve, who led the now disbanded Murray Border Association Vietnam Veterans for about 16 years, has been a men's health peer education representative through the Department of Veterans Affairs since 2001.
Along with the other veteran representative, Victorian RSL president Robert Webster, Mr Treeve will be a source of information for the 22 students on the tour.
IN OTHER NEWS:
"I'll just talk to them about the culture and the people, and what I've experienced since the war finished," he said.
He has visited Vietnam previously, a tourist trip in 2016 and an earlier, more emotional return 15 years after his war service.
"The first time I went back it was just basically to get the monkey off my back," Mr Treeve said.
"It was good, I needed to go back, just to look at Vietnam in a totally different way."
