They were his first taste of classical music.
"We were on a farm at Boree Creek and I used to listen to my grandfather's old cassette tapes," he said.
"That's when I felt a connection to the music."
As a boarder at The Scots School Albury, Strong pursued his love of music.
He got the lead role in Les Misérables as a Year 11 student during 2002.
"I became addicted to being on stage," he quipped.
Strong studied at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, Canberra School of Music and Sydney Conservatorium of Music.
Among award highlights were the Royal York Trust Scholarship and the 2014 Opera foundation for Young Australians New York Opera Scholarship.
Twelve months ago, Strong teamed up with Sydney-based principal tenors David Hamilton and Stuart Kemp to form TenOrZ Downunder.
TenOrZ Downunder in Concert will run at the Albury Entertainment Centre for the first time on March 23.
Strong said the show focused on Australian music such as Waltzing Matilda, Click Go The Shears and I Still Call Australia Home along with musical theatre classics.
He said they would be joined by pipers from The Scots School Albury.
"I grew up listening to the pipers every morning at school; now I get to play with them," Strong said.
"It's great the school can be involved; it's going to be great to do some music with the two pipers."
Now Albury retirees, Strong's parents will be in the audience.
He said he looked forward to having family and friends at the show.
"The audience can expect something enjoyable; we've integrated pop into classical singing," he said.
"There is a lot of banter throughout the show too."
