It’s great to see pictures of people proudly showing off their catch on social media but the downside to that is the ridiculous comments some people make toward the person holding them.

The biggest blast usually comes when someone has a cod hanging off a set of lip grippers firmly locked in the fish's jaw.

Ok, we all get that this can damage a fish, but what about a polite suggestion that it might be a good idea to cradle the fish's belly next time you handle one rather than going straight for the jugular and ridiculing the crap out of them!

The stupid thing is that it’s often kids copping the blast!

Obviously, the fisho posting doesn’t realise they’re doing the wrong thing, otherwise they wouldn’t be putting themselves out there for ridicule, so how about just politely letting them know and using social media to help educate the masses rather than embarrass them to a point where they possibly won’t ever post again for fear of another blast from all the know-alls.

The other blast from the do-gooders is the one where they make stupid or snide remarks about anyone who keeps a few fish for a feed.

They don’t even have to be close to their bag limit and someone’s saying, “you can’t eat all those”, ‘’why would you keep that many’’ or “how could you kill such a beautiful fish”.

The rules are there for a reason and have been carefully decided upon by the fisheries.

They obviously believe that the bag limits and closed seasons that are set out are enough to protect a particular species so where do others get off on abusing other fishos who love to eat fish?

They might have family members who love to eat fish or maybe even have old neighbours that aren’t fit enough to get out themselves anymore that would love a feed of fish.

If you don’t eat fish or simply have a philosophy of letting everything you catch go that’s fine, and there’s plenty of fishos out there like that who are perfectly ok with others doing their own thing.

I think it just boils down to the minority of vocal radicals that get their kicks from trying to prove to everyone they know everything that needs to be known and enjoy getting onto a keyboard to try to prove it.

Talbingo: seems to be a bit of a hot spot of late, with many fishos doing well, particularly on the reddies.

We’ve heard consistent reports from the Sue City end of the lake for about three weeks now, with small yabbies being the best bait but quite a few also being caught on small vibes as well as on the troll.

There’s also been some decent trout being picked up on the troll at anywhere between 10 to 15 metres.

The snowy lakes are all holding pretty steady at the moment although Tantangara has dropped a couple of per cent in the last week.

All are producing fish but they’re still pretty hard work and, as you would expect, getting down to them is the secret.

Blowering (28 per cent): has also been on the quiet side.

One fisho I know, who fishes it regularly, put in a decent session on Wednesday night followed by a decent crack at the reddies on Thursday for one 750mm cod and zero reddies so I wouldn’t be racing up there in a hurry.

Hume (28.7 per cent):  hasn’t been too bad this week!

There have been some good bags of reddies being reported, mainly on yabbies, but the blades and vibes are also accounting for a few too.

There’s a lot of little ones to wade through but Shane Bradbury and his son picked up 25 keepers with a combination of angling and casting, which seems to be the go at the moment.

Live shrimp is also working great if you can find a few and then keep the temperamental little buggers alive.

Cod are firing just about everywhere, with just about every style of lure and bait working.

If you haven’t caught a cod before, now’s the time to make the effort.

Streams: have picked up dramatically since that ridiculously hot spell, with most fishos reporting decent numbers again and fly, bait and lure are all proving successful.

Dartmouth (64.4 per cent): has been ok without being brilliant.

Most fishos are trolling deep and doing ok.

I did hear of one trout trolled off the top during the week!

I’d reckon that would be the exception rather than the rule and I wouldn’t reckon we’ll see too many off the top for a while yet though.

The yabbies are still on the chew though if you’re looking to do something different.
