Cr Mack plans to do both in the short-term before stepping down at some stage in April ahead of the election in May.
"This is a time wasting lot of nonsense coming out of a nervous office belonging to Sussan Ley," Cr Cameron said.
"This shrill dog whistling just shows how desperate Sussan Ley has become.
"Ben Chifley was president of Abercrombie Shire while he was Prime Minister of Australia and did both jobs very well indeed.
"Even if I didn't think he could do both roles it is immaterial because it is the law."
Deputy mayor Amanda Cohn, who is the front-runner to be acting mayor if Cr Mack decides take leave of absence at some point, has also backed the mayor to stay on.
Cr van de Ven plans to raise the issue in urgent business at the Monday night council meeting.
