So much for caring
I refer back to the article published in The Border Mail recently, 'Women will not get Tasers for self-defence against violent men'.

Yet these same ignorant people decry violence against women in this country and elsewhere.
These are the people voted in by you the voters of Victoria. Think about it.

Fat chance of buying lamb
Doing my routine grocery shopping at a major Lavington food chain store I was checking out the price of lamb products, specifically cutlets. Now I've known for a while such cuts were expensive but was stunned to find an even worse example.
Regular lamb cutlets with the usual little bit of fat around the edges were $39.00 kg. However, the same product but "trimmed" of the fat was $50.00 kg. So, in effect, farmers reckon consumers are willing to pay $11.00 kg more for lamb fat to be removed. Not more meat, just less fat.
Now I know many farmers continue to struggle but they have lost my support and respect with what can only be called price gouging the people they rely on to support them. This is just greed. Time to boycott these farmers until they stop their gouging.

Water education is key
I should just shut my mouth, or put down my pen, but sometimes things just need to be said.
By some strange coincidence, I've been in close proximity to four recent drownings at both the weir and the river and it leads me to believe that as long as water exists, humans will drown. All we can do as water people is to try to minimise the numbers.
As with most things, it's all about education.
Swimming regularly year-round in both the river and weir since 1972 has not ended my life. However I would never enter the water without a flotation device. I wear a basic $40 life vest, and wear it upside down. It looks weird but is very effective when immersed in water. There are also brief water ski flotation wetsuits. Both these methods still allow use of all limbs when out of your depth, however basic swimming knowledge and experience are imperative.
Our breathing holes are in our faces, not in the back of our heads so I implore all swimming instructors to emphasise the importance of learning backstroke. When in water we draw more air. It is up to each individual family to ensure that all within that family who like to swim in summer are suitably competent and equipped.
To see the joy and happiness on peoples' faces by the waterways should never be discouraged. The waterways themselves are too sparse with many entry points, so signage everywhere is unrealistic though a few more vivid signs at popular entry spots might help.
We are not fish so common sense prevails in all situations. Take care water lovers.
