Simon Killeen, a seventh-generation Rutherglen resident and self-proclaimed “history nerd”, said he was delighted to take up the top role.
“It’s about preserving and building upon the true story of the community of Rutherglen and the area,” he said.
“Once these stories, or certain bits of knowledge are lost, they are perhaps gone forever so we are working hard to authenticate and preserve them."
Mr Killeen said that he was keen to inspire the next generation of historians.
“Research is addictive," Mr Killeen said. "Becoming a member is an easy way to join in and help with our research or even perform your own.
"We change research topics regularly and are always happy to help with visitor’s requests.”
The society runs the Common School Museum, which was the first purpose-built, legally mandated, free, secular and compulsory school in the Victorian colony.
The society is moving into the online world with Victoria Collections as the internet window to its catalogue and there is also a new blog on the society’s website: rutherglenhistoricalsociety.com.au
The Common School Museum opens Friday, 11am to 3pm, Saturday, Sunday and Monday, 1pm to 4pm.
