Keighen Lloyd has been warned by a magistrate against associating with his mates who have led him down the wrong path.
Lloyd was not charged with the incident, but police did find cannabis, 36 ecstasy pills, bottles with tea towels and gauze, petrol, batons, fireworks, a balaclava and more.
Magistrate Ian Watkins on Thursday ordered Lloyd undertake 80 hours of community work.
The Wodonga court heard he had spent two weeks on remand, which was his first time in custody.
The court heard his friendship group had had a negative influence on his life, and he plans not to associate with them any more.
The court had earlier been told Lloyd was attacked by three people who forced their way into his home, leading him to arm himself.
Lloyd had detoxed from his heavy marijuana habit while in custody, and intended to live with his parents.
Mr Watkins noted who had attended court.
“Those friends that you’ve had, how many of them are in court to support you?” he said.
Lloyd said there were none.
Mr Watkins said the 20-year-old, who has an 11-page criminal history, had a chance to move on.
The court heard he hopes to get a job as a painter.
He was released from custody and has 18 months to complete the community work.
