Morgan Lachlan Bradley appeared before the Wodonga Magistrates Court this week following his arrest on January 10.
His partner, who he has been in a relationship with since November, told police she had been stomped on, and hit with scissor handles and the handle of a hammer.
The court heard the woman had told him to leave her home during an argument on January 2, leading him to spin her around, punch her in the face and stomp on her.
Bradley allegedly attacked her six days later after she awoke while he stood over her.
They fought over who had smoked their last cigarette, with Bradley asking “do you think you can f--- me over like that?”
His partner told police he had held scissors to her throat and asked “do you want to have your eyes stabbed out or your throat cut?” multiple times.
He allegedly hit her with the handle of the scissors before hitting her three times with a hammer handle.
Bradley allegedly said he would hold her underwater until she was blue, pull her out, then put her back under.
He allegedly tied her up and said he would kill her, claiming he had killed others.
The incident only stopped when she pretended to be asleep.
He denied all the accusations during later questioning by police.
Lawyer Sally Wilson said the incident did not occur in the way his partner had claimed, and said there were some “unusual aspects” to the woman’s statement which didn’t add up.
Some items consistent with her account were found at the home.
The case will return to court on April 10 ahead of a contested hearing in June.
