Cavanough was set to target the $180,000 feature once again with city winner Brazen who finished sixth in the cup last year taken out by Willi Willi.

Brazen was meant to have his final hit-out in the $130,000 National Sprint (1400m) at Canberra on Sunday.

But Cavanough was forced to scratch his galloper with a foot abscess.

"Brazen was targeting the Albury Cup again but we had to scratch him from the National Sprint on Sunday after we found he had a foot abscess," Cavanough said.

"So we are behind the eight-ball and can't afford to lose too much time with it.

"We will try to work him tomorrow morning (Tuesday) and go from there."

Regardless if Brazen targets the cup or not, Cavanough is still planning to make the eight hour trek from his Scone base for the Albury carnival.

"We mapped out a bit of a plan today (Monday) and we will definitely have four runners for the feature races on the Friday," he said.

"I'm struggling to find a Guineas horse a bit so we might have a few B-graders that still go around in the race.

"At this early stage it could be four runners over the carnival or it could be as many as 10 - I'm not sure."

Cavanough returned to his former stomping ground last year with six runners.

He notched a winning double with Informertial and Another Sin.

Albury trainer Mitch Beer who leases Cavanough's stables is planning a huge assault over the carnival with up to 15 runners.

Beer tweeted last week "Only 2½ weeks until the @AlburyRacing carnival, at this stage we will have 15 runners for the stable."

Cavanough spotted the tweet and couldn't resist firing back a cheeky reply.

"Move over little dog, a big dog is coming back."
