There are concerns the fire, lit at Dandongadale on Friday afternoon, could threaten properties.
A large number of firefighters continue to battle the bushfire, which has spread to cover 1200 hectares of land.
The fire appeared to have been lit near Mcready Track and the Upper Rose River Road track, with detectives hoping someone noticed suspicious activity in the area.
"A number of small fires were deliberately lit in the Dandongadale area," Wangaratta Detective Sergeant Chris Hill said.
"Those fires have continued to grow into a large scale fire, between Dandongadale and Rose River.
"The fire may threaten assets through the King Valley and is likely to cause smoke damage to assets."
The incident is under investigation.
"We are requesting information in regards to suspicious vehicles seen in the area," Detective Sergeant Hill said.
"Any people with dashcam footage who were camping or hunting in the area can contact Crime Stoppers.
"It is concerning, especially given the current climate with the bushfire risk the state is in."
A watch and act warning is in place for Rose River, with residents urged to monitor conditions.
The fire has reached control lines near private property as aircraft continue to drop water on the flames.
