Border Mail letters to the editor
When will pollies wake up
The letter to the editor ('Basin plan is a monumental disaster,' March 21) from Jan Beer just bought up all the issues that have been on my mind for so long. Our politicians couldn't run a chook raffle let alone a country. I work in an industry that has me dealing with dairy and livestock producers on a daily basis. These people are a minority of our population but they are our backbone. Every other minority group in this country at present seem to be bowed down to. I thought it was a democracy with majority rule.
These producers feed us and I am sure most people would prefer home grown products. If we don't start doing something about it we will only have imported food products in the future.

The city is told and believes it is tough out here because of the drought and that's true. But we have had droughts on and off forever. The water management is a joke. Three controlling bodies! How many people does it take to change a light globe.
When water became a commodity it just bought with it corruption and greed.
I think water should have never become a commodity as isn't it everybody's right? My views on management of this are too simplistic so I won't go into it because politicians don't do simple or common sense. Everything they do has to have a committee, steering committee, oh, and if that doesn't work we'll have a Royal Commission. It's a joke. Easy when it's not their money being used.
With a federal election on the horizon, how could we vote for any of them with the view that they have the country's best interests at heart? Everyone I talk to has no faith in the major parties so we can expect record numbers of donkey votes and independent votes.
Do we have to wait till producers just walk off their properties or there are no Australian products on supermarket shelves before we realise how our politicians are ruining this great country.

Cathy's done us proud
It is with some sadness to the electorate of Indi, that our federal Independent member of Parliament, Cathy McGowan has advised of her retirement at the coming election. It was she, as an Independent, who was able to lift our electorate out of being an unenviable poorly represented muddy backwater, and into one of the most envied and respected in the country.
We, the residents of Indi, due to dignified common sense, have had no part in the inane screaming matches, musical chairs, backbiting, untruths, and the encouragement of hatred in which the major parties demonstrate.
Proudly, our Independent representative's political loyalty is only to our country and our people for which we should be eternally grateful. That is the very high standard which has now been set, from our having an Independent local representative for the seat of Indi.
I am a returned serviceman and had the pleasure of meeting with Helen Haines, who Voices For Indi have nominated as the replacement candidate as the next Independent member for our electorate. Her views very closely resemble those of the retiring independent member, and she fully understands the ramifications and hard work in being an independent representative.
