Pedigree and Whiskas items made by Mars Petcare have largely vanished from the two major grocery chains over the last week.
Woolworths and Coles have blamed "supply" issues, although Albury's IGA supermarkets have had no problems with their flow of dog and cat food from Mars.
When contacted on Tuesday about why its goods were not on the big two's shelves and whether there was a dispute between the pet food manufacturer and Woolworths and Coles, Mars Petcare Australia corporate communications manager Andrea Bradley said she would look into the matter and respond.
Hours later Ms Bradley replied: "I don't have anything to share with you at this point, I'll get in touch if anything changes over the week."
A Woolworths spokesman told The Border Mail the retailer was seeking a remedy, without specifying the direct cause of the problem.
"We have recently experienced some supply shortages on a few pet food lines," he said.
"We are working with the supplier to improve availability for our customers as quickly as possible."
A Coles representative did not reply to The Border Mail.
Notices attached to its shelves at Border outlets states: "Due to supply issues with Mars Petcare, we are currently experiencing availability issues on selected products.
"We apologise for any inconvenience caused."
Lavington owners of a mastiff and shepherd were told on Sunday that supply problems had affected Woolworths at Lavington for the previous week.
