A 63 year-old Queensland utility driver died at the scene of a crash between a car and a truck at Sweetwater Creek Bridge on Thursday night.
A 46 year-old truck driver was treated before being airlifted to Canberra Hospital in a serious but stable condition with head and back injuries.
Recovery crews were working to get the truck's trailer, which was carrying lettuces and cauliflowers, out of the creek on Friday morning.
Northbound traffic is being diverted through the Olympic Highway. Both southbound lanes of the highway remain open.
UPDATE FRIDAY, 6.30AM: A 63 year-old Queensland utility driver died at the scene of a crash between a car and a truck on the Hume Highway at Mullengandra on Thursday night.
A 46 year-old truck driver was treated before being airlifted to Canberra Hospital in a serious but stable condition with head and back injuries.
Police said emergency services were called to Sweetwater Creek Bridge just after 8:20pm following reports of a crash between a Mazda utility, that was towing a Morris Minor van on a trailer, and a B-double truck.
The Mazda utility flipped onto its roof on impact and caught fire.
Murray River Police District officers remain at the scene and have launched an investigation into the incident.

Meanwhile Victoria Police officers are investigating a fatal crash in Bearii, near Cobram on Thursday evening.
Police believed a vehicle has left Sharps Lane about 8pm and struck a tree.
The yet to be identified driver and only occupant died at the scene, with the exact cause of the crash yet to be determined.
THURSDAY: A person has died in Thursday night's Hume Highway collision, a police media spokesman has confirmed.
The exact circumstances of the crash were unclear, but the spokesman said a truck and car appeared to have collided.
EARLIER: Emergency services are at the scene of a truck fire on the Hume Highway near Mullengandra on Thursday night.
The northbound lanes of the Hume Highway were closed about 8.45pm with reports the truck fire has been extinguished by NSW Rural Fire Service crews at the scene.
An ambulance from Canberra attended the scene and departed around 10pm.
Northbound traffic is being diverted onto the Olympic Highway north of Albury.
