Jail imposed for Lavington crook who can't resist offending
A REPEAT offender who has managed to avoid jail for a string of crimes is looking at a stint behind bars, with a magistrate noting that nothing seems to be deterring him from breaking the law.
Christopher John Asquith had been on seven good behaviour bonds for incidents including swearing, criminal damage, phone theft and shop theft.
Despite this, the 50-year-old walked into Forty Winks in Albury on November 13 last year and stole a table lamp worth $129.
Asquith this week told Albury Local Court he took the item "for no reason at all".
"I didn't need it," he said.
Asquith said "the things I do, they're very silly" and noted he was using drugs which were "no good for me".
Magistrate Rodney Brender said the Turner Street resident had an unimpressive record, and his behaviour wasn't being curbed by previous court orders.
"Nothing's working," he said.
"I'm not going to impose a bond for a third time.
"It's just ridiculous."
He said a jail term of seven months was appropriate and will see if Asquith is able to serve the term as home detention.
The matter will return to court on April 24.
