Albury's Sergeant Angus Longley said teachers discovered the student's replica gun, known as a bb gun or gel blaster, on March 18 and contacted police and the department of education.
He said some gel blasters were classed as firearms in NSW.
IN OTHER NEWS:
Sergeant Longley said the gel blaster in question did meet the criteria of a pistol despite having an orange trigger and cap, so a firearms licence was required to own it.
He said the child had bought the gun online and no charges were laid because of the child's age and because he had not been using it to threaten anyone.
Sergeant Longley said a police youth liaison officer had spoken to the child and parents about the bb gun and the appropriateness of taking it to school.
