The five-day closure has been pushed back a week to April 12-16 to allow Regional Roads Victoria to strengthen bridge supports, and install new culverts to increase drainage and reduce the severity of impacts from future flood events.
RRV North Eastern regional director Steve Bowmaker said he understood the importance of the bridge connecting Wangaratta and Beechworth, but the repairs were a "complex operation".
"Easter is certainly a consideration for our works schedule and we're doing our best to ensure planned closures don't clash with this busy period of time," he said.
"Our repair works mean a safer, stronger bridge for years to come.
"During the second closure we'll be reconstructing the pavement on the Wangaratta approach, following significant damage sustained during the flash flooding event."
