Cochise Love, 23, and Tyson Page, 20, covered their hands with shirts as they tried to take the machine at Willow Park in the early hours of March 6 last year.
Love and Page appeared before the County Court on Thursday on charges of attempted theft.
Judge Richard Smith highlighted what could have gone wrong if the pair, who pushed buttons to start the machine, were successful.
"The very thought of the damage that might have occurred had you somehow managed to get behind the wheel and start up the boom lift is simply frightening in my view," he said.
Judge Smith said both were "at an age now where you should know right from wrong" and face a "grim" future if they continued their behaviour.
Both must perform 200 hours of unpaid work.
