An announcement, supported by both the Liberal and National parties, will be made on Thursday.

If constructed, it would be a major facility catering for sports including football, cricket, netball, soccer, rugby, tennis, cycling, hockey and gymnastics.

Sport Minister Bridget McKenzie said Baranduda Fields was an example of projects "that our communities expect and deserve".

"It is these local sports infrastructure that are at the centre of our regional communities and will drive increased participation in sports and physical activity," she said.

The project has been in Wodonga Council's plans for about a decade, but repeatedly overlooked for federal funding - including in the building better regions fund announcements made just last month.

Less than two weeks ago, Senator McKenzie told The Border Mail it was unfortunate that not all applications, like Baranduda Fields, could receive federal funding.

"Many worthwhile projects missed out. The Baranduda project is a great project that will deliver many benefits to the community," she said.

The $10 million will come out of the 2019-20 budget, but because no contract was signed before an election was called, spending the money is still dependent on the Coalition winning the Indi and federal elections.

Indi Liberal candidate Steve Martin said it was an investment in the growth corridor of Baranduda.

"Many of our current facilities are crammed, with trainings at insane hours and multiple teams training at once, especially youth and women," he said.

"Baranduda Fields kicking off is another piece of the puzzle for Wodonga, continuing our growth as a major regional city and a central hub for our region."

Nationals candidate Mark Byatt said he had supported the project for more than a decade.

"This investment in a sporting precinct is unprecedented in Wodonga," he said.

"It will provide vital new modern facilities for clubs like Murray United Football Club and increase sporting participation, getting our community more active, more often."

Wodonga Council recently updated its Baranduda Fields master plan to ensure the project is "shovel-ready" when funding is available.
