Political parties have been conducting their own polls of electorates and The Border Mail understands the numbers show incumbent Liberal MP Ms Ley would receive just under half of the primary vote and cruise to a comfortable victory.

The polling has Mr Mack attracting less than 20 per cent, well short of the number he would need to claim the seat.

More than 1000 people were surveyed about who they would vote for, asked about Ms Ley and Mr Mack by name.

The poll had Labor's Kieran Drabsch just behind Mr Mack with less than 20 per cent of the vote and the Greens and other minor parties with under 5 per cent of the vote.

Polling numbers are in contrast to the betting odds, which according to Sportsbet, now have Ms Ley as a slim favourite at $1.80 and Mr Mack just behind her at $1.90.

When betting opened, she had been at the very short price of $1.03.

The introduction of the Albury mayor into the race has put added pressure on Ms Ley, with a highly visible campaign.

"It is clear there is no one effectively representing this electorate. Farrer matters and I know the electorate thinks so too," Mr Mack said after the election was called.

"Together we can fix things, with local solutions, and make sure the rest of the country knows we're here."

Ms Ley has said she will not be taking anything for granted.

"Independents step up and good on them, but the answer for these communities is not independent representation," she said last week.
