Revered Australian talent Katie Noonan and her jazz trio Elixir will perform songs from their new album, Gratitude and Grief, a collaboration with North East-based poet and cartoonist Michael Leunig. Released this year, Gratitude and Grief first premiered at the Sydney Opera House in November 2016. The music showcases poetry, angelic vocals and sublime improvisation. Violet Town-based Leunig has explored political, cultural and emotional issues for more than 35 years. He was made one of Australia's Living Treasures by the National Trust of Australia in 1999.
Beechworth's popular Golden Horseshoes Festival is back bigger and better than ever. The Golden Horseshoes Parade kicks off from 1pm on Saturday, in a re-enactment of what occurred in 1855 when a horse shod with shoes of gold was ridden by political candidate Daniel Cameron through the centre of town with 80 mounted horsemen in tow. Festival highlights over three days include markets, cooking demonstrations and movie screenings.
