In what may be a first since Martin Cross coached Myrtleford's seniors and reserves in 1966, McGrath will lead two Tiger grades after stepping into the top position with Luke Daly in the aftermath of Peter German's surprise departure.
German could not be contacted for comment.
Club president Stuart Hodgson said he believed McGrath and Daly were the right people to lead the Tigers after what had been a "tough couple of days".
"Tommy's almost been like a silent voice during our success," Hodgson said.
"He's been in the background for a long time playing an important role.
"I'm sure he and Luke will do a fantastic job."
McGrath has been a senior assistant-coach at Albury for 13 seasons, as well as coaching the club's reserves for seven years and thirds for four.
While McGrath admitted busy times were ahead, the Tiger stalwart said the club's support network was strong enough for him to coach the senior and third grade sides.
"It's exciting, a great honour," McGrath said.
"We have great leaders down there so it's probably an extension of what I've been doing.
"Luke will be fantastic to work with, and then you have Shaun (Daly) and 'Hydey' (Chris Hyde) who are obviously still there, 'Hodgy' (Stuart Hodgson), 'DC' (Dale Carroll) and Paul Spargo are around and you have all those other great players who know what they are doing.
"We have great kids coming through so it's a good time to be involved."

McGrath doesn't expect to make radical changes to the game plan which has seen Albury register three wins from four matches this season.
"Those older guys in the side know what they do," he said.
"'Germo' had some good ideas which he brought in but we will probably go back a little bit to the stuff we have done previously structure wise."
Daly brought up his 200th match for Albury in last year's grand final and marked the occasion with his sixth senior flag.
