Gray was found guilty by the Tallangatta league independent tribunal of using abusive language towards an umpire on Tuesday night.
He pleaded not guilty to the charge.
There was conflicting reports of what was said during the hearing which lasted 90 minutes.
Gray has previously been suspended for a total of 10 weeks.
Under the Australian Football League Deregistration Policy any player suspended for 16 games will receive a lifetime ban.
A player can appeal the ban after 12 months from the date of the ban.
Both time-keepers had the score as a draw.
Tension surrounding the scores threatened to boil over after the final siren, leading to Gray being reported for abusive language.
