The teacher revealed the schoolyard incident at an ABC radio election forum in Albury on Thursday night when asked how he would address the needs of the LGBTQI community.
"This is really a personally affecting question for me, as a gay man who had to live through the marriage equality debate and was at school with a 12 year-old who said 'gee I wish I could shoot all the....'," Mr Moss said.
"I'll let you finish that one yourself.
"Now I'm a grown man and I had to take that very personally."
The bile came the day of the gay marriage vote result as Mr Moss walked to an oval for a PE class at the school.
"It made me freeze again and I thought 'oh my God, everything we've been through and there's so much more to go'," Mr Moss told The Border Mail on Friday.
However, Mr Moss said he was heartened by the reception he and his partner had had in Albury after moving from Brisbane six years ago.
"I'm thrilled Albury is a progressive city and we've only dealt with limited homophobia," he said.
"I was happily surprised."
Mr Moss wants LGBTQI needs addressed through having a specific human rights commissioner and better mental health services via online methods and headspace treatment for under-12s.
Meanwhile, Mr Moss said if the Greens were elected they would invest in more drug and alcohol counselling in Albury and improved access to methadone.
He said the city's hospital emergency department was flooded with ice-related cases.
