The Hoppers, who lost a stack of their best players over summer, outscored the visitors after quarter time to fall 9.15 (69) to 7.9 (51).
"Full credit to them, they played pretty well and closed us down after the first quarter," Rovers' coach Daryn Cresswell said.
Rovers booted five goals to two behinds in the opening stanza, but then posted just 4.12 to 7.7.
The rejuvenated Hawks lacked polish without VFL players Charlie Thompson and Tom McCaffrey, and under 18 star Nick Murray.
Dylan Stone and Raven Jolliffe kicked two goals each, with the latter joining former NEAFL defender Nathan Cooper, who's rapidly gaining a strong reputation, and another recruit Tristan Lenaz in the best.
North coach Isaac Muller was outstanding in the ruck, while Simon Hiller was also superb.
