Central raced to a 3-0 lead inside six minutes during Saturday's clash, before going on to record a 5-2 victory.
The visitors backed it up on Sunday with a 3-1 win to force the Spitfires outside the top-four.
"We came out flat and let that first goal in and our heads dropped," Payne said after Saturday's defeat.
"It wasn't until the quarter-time break that we could give everyone a rev up and start again by doing what we wanted to do from the beginning.
"I thought we right in it after that.
"We had a lot of control and created a lot of chances for ourselves.
"We put a couple in and could have slipped one or two more in.
"It makes it hard when you're on the back foot the whole time and you're chasing."
Payne and Tim Smith got on the board for the Spitfires, but a hat trick from Central's Matt Hotchkis was telling.
"We knew how dangerous their striker (Hotchkis) can be and we went in with a game plan to try cancel him out a bit," Payne said.
"Good players like that always seem to get their goals somehow.
"I think we've got to be more aware of it and we know what to expect next time."
The Spitfires women were beaten 3-0 by United at Canberra's Carter Field on Saturday.
